British Columbia student aid or BC student aid comes in a wide variety of forms including BC student loans, BC student grants and BC bursaries, and scholarships. There are programs for full time students, part time students, students with disabilities, and students with dependents.
If you are a resident of British Columbia, and you will be attending college, you may find that you need help paying for your college education. One of the best ways to do this – unless you already have the funds saved to pay for school – is with some type of BC student aid.
Among the BC student loans that are offered, there are three types. The first is the British Columbia Student Loan, which is issued and administered through the government of British Columbia. The Second is the Canada Student Loan, which is offered through the Canadian Government, and the third is also issued through the Canadian Government for part time students. Student loans must be repaid, and repayment begins six months after you graduate from college, or quit school. All three are top sources of BC student aid for Canada’s students residing in British Columbia.

BC student grants and BC Bursaries do not have to be repaid. These are also available through the British Columbia Government and the Canadian Government. BC scholarships also do not have to be repaid, and while some are administered through the government, the biggest majority of those that are available are administered through private organizations and corporations.
While many scholarships are awarded based on need, they also have other eligibility requirements, such as a specific field of study, and most will also have specific requirements concerning your academic achievement. While you must maintain an adequate GPA to obtain and continue to receive BC student aid through government resources as well, you won’t have to worry about competition or essays when you apply for grants and loans.
If you have a permanent disability, there are special financial BC student aid programs available to assist you in paying for your education, as well as in obtaining any needed equipment to help you attain your education. If you are a student who has dependents under the age of twelve, you will find special programs designed for you as well, such as child care grants, to help you pay for child care while you attend school.
These BC financial aid funding sources come from the government of British Columbia, as well as the Canadian Federal Government. You can tap into BC student aid funding from both sources by applying through the Ministry of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development in British Columbia, through one of the Designated Canada Post Outlets, or online.
Once you have completed your education, your BC student loans must be repaid. If you find that you are having trouble with those payments, BC student aid also has a Repayment Assistance Program, which will make it less of a financial burden to repay what you owe as well. Repayment is administered through the British Columbia student loan service bureau, or BCSL, unless they come from the Federal Government, in which case they are administered through the National student loans service centre, or NSLSC.
Because of the numerous BC financial aid options available for financing your college education, there is no reason not to further your education as much as possible, to ensure that your future is secure.
